Certifications

Gain the skill and knowledge you need to provide care and act in an emergency with our Certification programs.

This Red Cross Certification course will certify individuals in lifeguarding, (waterfront for those 16 and older) CPR for the professional Rescuer, First Aid, and AED. Participants must be at least 15 by time of first class.

The following requirements are to be completed the first night of class and are necessary in order to take the course:

  1. Swim 550 yards, continuously demonstrating breath control and rhythmic breathing. Candidates may swim using the front crawl, breaststroke or a combination of both, but swimming on the back or side is not allowed. Swim goggles may be used.
  2. Swim 5 yards submerge and retrieve three dive rings placed 5 yards apart in 4 to 7 feet of water, resurface and continue to swim another 5 yards to complete the skill sequence.
  3. Tread water for 2 minutes using legs only. Candidates should place hands under their armpits.
  4. Complete a timed event, within 1 minute and 40 seconds.
    1. Starting in the water, swim 20 yards. The face can be in or out of the water. No goggles can be worn
    2. Surface dive, feet first or headfirst to depth of 7 to 10 feet to retrieve a 10- pound object.
    3. Return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point with both hands holding the objects and keeping the face at or near the surface so they are able to get a breath.

Please be aware that during each class the above skills may be practiced, including the 550-yard swim.

Participants must pass 100% of these water skills in addition to passing a written test by at least 80%. There are no refunds for failure to pass either requirement. Attendance is critical at every class. Absences may result in no certification.

American Red Cross certifications for Lifeguarding/First Aid and CPR/AED for the Lifeguard are valid for two years. Certifications will be issued upon the successful completion of the course.


Those who do not pass the pre-test on the first night will receive a refund minus $50.00.


Program is offered approximately every session from September through June.

Attention Participants:
This is a blended learning course that combines online learning directly through Red Cross, with on-site skills sessions here at the Y, where you will practice skills and demonstrate competency. Please plan to complete the initial online lessons of your training at least two days prior to your first on-site skills session.

Attention Non-Members:
All Non-Members must sign a Non-Member Program Participant Waiver in order to participate in programs. Please print, sign and return to Member Services Desk upon or before attending the first class.

This program will enable you to re-certify your lifeguarding, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and First Aid certifications.  Participants are required to pass 100% of the water skills and 80% of all written tests in order to be re-certified.  Little review will be given. Participants must bring own mask and proof of prior certification (must have been valid within last 40 days).


This course is offered periodically throughout the year, typically late December, early January, mid-May and early June. If no current listings contact Aquatics Director to learn when next recertification course may be offered.

Participant must be 15 years of age on or before date of final exam.

Become a certified Red Cross Water Safety Instructor!  Learn to teach children and adults to swim and give water safety presentations to kids and their parents.  Must be at least 16 and a Level 4 American Red Cross Swimmer!  100% attendance required at all classes. Participants must pass 100% of water skills and 80% of written tests.

Dates/times below are for practical instruction that will take place at the Y. This course is a blended learning program with additional online instruction through the Red Cross website.  You will be forwarded a link from the Aquatics Director to log into the course. An additional fee of $35 will be required upon log-in.


Participants must sign a Code of Conduct Waiver. This course is offered periodically throughout the year, typically in January and May/June.  If no current listings contact Aquatics Director to learn when next course may be offered.

See what it takes to be a lifeguard instructor during this intensive training where students learn how to teach courses and presentations in the American Red Cross Lifeguarding program.  Participants will develop an understanding of how to use course material, conduct training sessions, and how to evaluate progress. Attendance is critical as absences may result in no certification. Participants must pass 100% of water skills and 80% written tests.

This course incorporates the latest science and teaches students to recognize and care for a variety of first aid emergencies such as burns, cuts, scrapes, sudden illness, head, neck, back injuries, heat and cold emergencies, and how to respond to breathing and cardiac emergencies to help victims of any age – teens, adults, and pediatric (infants and children up to 12 years). Those who successfully complete the course will be certified in Adult & Pediatric First Aid/CPR/AED for two years.

Learn how to be a responsible babysitter, how to handle emergencies, how to supervise and entertain children of different ages during this one day class. Must be 11 by time of class. Y membership is not required but space is limited. Bring a bag lunch. Contact Randy Smith for more information. Financial assistance available.
