Lesson Placement & Registration

Our swim lesson program is designed to help kids develop a lifelong love of the water with competency, confidence and endurance.

To reach this goal, students are introduced to:

  • Stroke Mechanics
  • Water Sports and Games
  • Personal Safety
  • Character Development

New Participants (or Returning Participants who have been out of our program for more than 6 months) must set up an evaluation to determine his/her swim level before registering for a class. Call Aquatic Director for an appointment. Evaluation is not needed for a beginner (those who have never had swimming lessons or cannot travel in the water), just sign up for the age-appropriate class.

Current Participants (or Returning Participants who have been out of our program for less than 6 months) swim level is on record in his/her membership account. This information may be accessed through our online services by logging into account and clicking on “My Account Info.” The level on record is the only level that your child may register for unless he/she has aged up from Preschool to Progressive, in which case you should consult the table below for age crossover equivalent. If child has gained significant skill progress outside of our program, we recommend being evaluated prior to registering again.

For children in our Preschool Levels aging up (turning 7) to our Progressive Levels, use the chart below as a guide for registering in the next session. (Our system will accommodate registrations based on the guidelines below. For example, system will allow a 6 year old who has Starfish level on his/her record to register for Guppy.)

Our lesson sessions are 7 weeks long. Evaluation is ongoing throughout the session. During week 5 or 6* we begin to make a determination on the progress of each swimmer and whether he/she should continue or move up a level for the upcoming session. Evaluations are done by the Deck Supervisor through skill observation and communication with the instructor. If a move is recommended, the swim level on the child’s account will be updated no later than the day before registration (typically the last week of classes) opens. Written progress reports will be distributed to participants during the last week of classes detailing the child’s status on each skill associated with the level.

*Varies based on whether there will be a break between sessions.

Due to the progressive nature of our classes, the first day of a session registration is open only to those members who are currently enrolled in session programs. However, each year, the first day of Fall I registration is open to all members.

Typically registration for an upcoming session opens during the last, or 2nd to last week of the current session. Therefore, the potential exists for a child to make the progress needed to advance to the next level after registration has begun. For this reason we ask that you always take the opportunity to register for the level on record at the time registration opens and if he/she progresses to another level we will arrange to accommodate him/her in the appropriate level (regardless of availability). If child has not been registered yet and this progress is made, the registration will be subject to availability.

During lessons, an Instructor(s) is assigned to each class to teach appropriate skills, working with children in the water. A Deck Supervisor is on hand to communicate with parents, evaluate student progress and generally oversee the logistics of the lesson period. Additionally, our Red Cross Certified Lifeguards are always on duty.
